Crushed & Cured
Piekenierskloof, Stonedance, Hutton Red, Swartland, 2020
A pleasing blend of halves of Shiraz and Grenache, all in barrel, 20% new, named after a type of Cape soil. Brambly aromas with a hint of rosehip. Youthful, cherry-accented fruit, bountiful and juicy.
Hutton is a type of soil in the Cape; usually to be found on the lower slopes and plains. Derived from granite, it's yellowish or rust-coloured, mildly acidic, but has decent structure and water-retaining qualities.
Stonedance is the second label of the Piekenierskloof estate (and their Fairtrade brand), a former co-operative which is enjoying a revival under private ownership and the impressive leadership of Cerina van Niekerk.
