Crushed & Cured
Landcraft, Loureiro, Vinho Branco, DOP Vinho Verde, 2023
Herbal and steely at the same time, the more austere, non-fruity side to the aroma is salty, too. But there's also an impression of ripe green fruits as it warms up in the glass. On the palate, plenty of herbal varietal character (Loureiro means 'laurel'), lively, bone dry and salty-fresh on the finish with the same green fruits as in the aroma. Almost too crisp to be drunk on its own unless you are an acid lover but with seafood or grilled white fish this should be good. The effect of lees ageing helps to balance the high acidity with a pear-grained grip to the texture. Long, mouth-watering finish.
This is a great and authentic expression of Vinho Verde. The vineyards are in the Lima Valley, 5kms. from the Atlantic Ocean. The soil is a mixture of clay and schist. The Loureiro is hand harvested and then aged on its lees for 8 months before bottling. So bright and fresh, it’s as revitalising as a swim in the Atlantic that neighbours the vineyards. Intense citrus notes of fresh orange and lemon, with a refreshing saline note. Dry, penetrating and textured too, so there’s substance here along with the brightness.
