Youthful purple. Ripe black fruit and coffee aromatics. So bold and vibrant, delivering a gorgeous gush of blackberry and dark plum. Manages the delicate balancing act of being both juicy and oaky at the same time. Nicely ripe tannins. This terrific Shiraz, given 20 months in new French barrels, is spectacular.
The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the only vineyard in the Ceres Plateau district, just six hectares split between Chardonnay and Shiraz on the steep, south facing slopes of the Gydo pass just north of Prince Albert Hamlet.
